Everyone's Gone to the Movies

On this one I start off on guitar with playing octaves on the melody, a typical jazz technique. I then get naughty and change the guitar sound to a shredding, highly flanged sound for the rest of the track. This is another track off the 1975 Katy Lied album.

F-Bomb

A wild piece of jazz rock funk! I went through a very 'out there' phase on guitar. Check out Mwah (another track) if you like this one.

Fields of Gold

Everyone loves a wistful ballad and this is one of the best. Sting has written several landmark tracks and this one must be up there in the top three, along with Every Breath You Take and Roxanne. I haven't tried to jazz it up much, keeping the rock feel.

Another pop/rock song off the Smile album. Feat AJ Lewis on vocals

FM (no static at all)

This is a song that was specifically written to order to be the title theme to the 1978 film FM. It made the US Top Forty that year when released as a single. It had been recorded during the same sessions as Aja and employed some of the same studio musicians and recording personnel, in addition to band members and songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Among them were saxophonist Pete Christlieb and drummer Jeff Porcaro; several members of the Eagles sang backing vocals. It only appears on compilation albums.

Footprints

My version of Footprints is very modern and could have been written yesterday, not 1996 when it first appeared. Footprints is written by American jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter who had many albums on Blue Note before going on to found jazz fusion band Weather Report with Joe Zawinul.

Getaway

This one has a bit of flute (synth), an instrument I don't like usually. The solo is a long time coming but well worth the wait!

Giant Steps

John Coltrane, the saxophonist, is another influential Blue Note Artiste. He was certainly a virtuoso player. This track is notoriously difficult to solo over due to having three tonal centres that change almost every bar! I got around this by slowing it down and playing in Pentatonic scales sparingly. It's a great track and I found that doing it in the style of Weather Report worked best. The faux lead bass line is me playing the lower registers of my Nylon stringed electro acoustic again. How do you like my trumpet solo, not a real one, the melody was played into MIDI and used a VSTi enhanced by a breath controller to make it more realistic. It's not 100% but almost indistinguishable from a real horn.

Goin' Home

An original composition that boogies along. This has loads of strings and horns you my recognise are inspired by Earth, Wind and Fire. I play all instruments, arrange, produce the track. From the Back To Basics album.

Nile Rodgers has played on over 2 Billion dollars worth of music! Yet, has he played one screaming guitar solo? Nope! So I play this Chic dance classic to showcase my rhythm guitar skills!

Goodbye PorkPie Hat

This track is composed by Charles Mingus originally recorded by his sextet in 1959 as listed below, and released on his album Mingus Ah Um. Mingus wrote it as an elegy for saxophonist Lester Young, who had died two months prior to the recording session, and was known to wear a broad-rimmed pork pie hat. It's been covered by many including Miles (hence the link to blue note), Joni Mitchell, Jeff Beck and other notables. I follow the Marcus Miller arrangement so I'm playing High Bass again.

Got to Get You Into My Life

Originally recorded by the Beatles of course (on the Revolver album I think). EWF gave this song a jazz funk arrangement, which I have stuck with.

Green Earrings

At first glance this is a 12 bar blues and on one level it is but on another this is actually modal jazz with three tonal centres. Great to solo over, once you've worked out the key changes! It's a driving piece and I use a dirtier guitar sound to be in character. It's got a bit of a House beat lurking underneath if you can spot it! This is about a jewel thief who feels no remorse whatsoever in what he does, even when he steals from a lover.

Grooves

This album is about the groove, about chasing it, and sometimes catching it! I was aiming for the vibe first and foremost. It's unapologetically feet tapping, sending brain worms to fire the feel-good synapses. It's mainly a keyboard album - not much guitar this time - but when it's there it's me at my best!

Haitian divorce

This track was marked by its distinctive 'voicebox' guitar, quite an innovation at the time when it was initially released Technology has moved on so much since the original track was recorded. The original voice box was a tube attached to your amp the sound from which went up a plastic tube and you mouthed vowels etc with your mouth close to a microphone. I have a pedal with a superb setting that does in digitally! I don't use it often but when I do I love it. So you get a clean guitar solo and a voice box one too for the same money! I always wondered why the almost reggae beat - that would mean it was called Jamaican Divorce! Slick move Donald to not do the obvious).
